
Mineral Springs of Zakarpattia
Zakarpattia has over 400 mineral springs — more than any other region in Europe. From light table waters to powerful therapeutic ones — the entire spectrum of the continent's mineral waters is concentrated here. Shayan is the ideal base for exploring this wealth: most key springs are within an hour's drive.
Mineral Springs from Shayan
Sodium bicarbonate, siliceous. Comparable to Borjomi. Pump room in the center of the village. Two wells: No. 242 (mineralization 3.06 g/L, high silicic acid content of 90 mg/L) and No. 4 (5.2 g/L, available only at the pump room). Treats the stomach, liver, pancreas, and metabolism. Known since 1818 — one of the oldest springs in Zakarpattia.
Unique iodine-lithium water. Lithium content of 1.3–1.7 mg/L is among the highest in Europe. Effective for thyroid disorders, nervous system conditions, and depression. Comparable to Essentuki. The village of Drahovo in Khust district is a picturesque place with several springs.
The highest calcium content in the region. Also rich in manganese, zinc, and lithium. The "Verkhovyna" sanatorium is one of the most renowned balneological facilities in Zakarpattia. Treats musculoskeletal conditions, osteoporosis, bone and joint disorders. Comfortable facilities for your stay.
One of the oldest resorts in the region — operating since 1800. Has two types of springs: ferruginous (for treating anemia) and bicarbonate (for the gastrointestinal tract). The village is located in the picturesque Latoritsa valley. Historically, Austro-Hungarian aristocracy would come here for "water seasons."
Luzhanska water is a legend among Ukrainian mineral waters. Gold medal at the 1855 Paris Exhibition. Called the "queen of diuretic waters" for its powerful diuretic effect. Treats kidney diseases, urinary tract conditions, and urolithiasis. Pump room in the city center. Svalyava is also known for the Schoenborn Palace (20 min further).
Luzhanska-7 is a water with high content of boron, iodine, and lithium. Lowers cholesterol, treats atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. The village of Holubyne in the Svalyava district — home to the "Kvitka Polonyny" sanatorium. A picturesque location in the Latoritsa valley with several mineral springs of different compositions.
The highest iron content among Zakarpattia mineral waters — 15–30 mg/L. The primary indication is iron-deficiency anemia. The water is literally "rust-colored" due to the high iron concentration. The village of Kelechyn in the Mizhhiria district — a mountain village with several ferruginous springs. It should be drunk directly from the spring — iron oxidizes quickly in the air.
Polyana Kvasova — 21 international awards since 1842. The most powerful alkaline water in Ukraine — pH up to 8.5. Mineralization 6.5–12 g/L. Effective for high-acidity stomach conditions, heartburn, reflux. The "Polyana" sanatorium is one of the largest balneological resorts in the country. Polyana Kvasova is sold throughout Ukraine, but fresh from the pump room is the most effective.
The closest Ukrainian equivalent to Borjomi. Contains orthoboric acid with bactericidal properties — a natural antiseptic for the gastrointestinal tract. Treats chronic inflammatory GI diseases, reduces the risk of infectious complications. The village of Ploske in the Svalyava district — a compact spring with an equipped pump room.
