
Castles of Zakarpattia — Day Trips from Shayan
Zakarpattia is a land of medieval castles and fortresses. Over the centuries, these lands belonged to different states, and each left its mark on the architecture. Staying at Zakarpattia Provence Estate in Shayan, you can easily visit the five most famous castles of the region — from the nearest in Khust (18 km) to the magnificent one in Uzhhorod (90 km).
Palanok Castle in Mukachevo is the crown jewel of Zakarpattia. This 14th-century fortress stands on a volcanic hill and has preserved its walls virtually intact. Inside, a historical museum operates, and from the ramparts you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire town. The drive from Shayan to Mukachevo takes about an hour, so you can combine the excursion with a stroll through the old town and lunch at a local restaurant.

Khust Castle is the closest to Shayan, only 18 km away. The fortress ruins sit atop a volcanic hill 174 meters high. From here, an incredible view of the Tysa valley unfolds. The climb to the castle takes about 20 minutes and is a wonderful walk in itself. Nevytskyi Castle near Uzhhorod features some of the most romantic ruins in Ukraine, surrounded by dense forest.
Schoenborn Palace (Chynadiyevo Castle) is a unique Baroque structure built as a hunting castle for the Counts of Schoenborn. The castle is surrounded by a park with rare trees and a lake. It is the perfect spot for photo sessions and a leisurely stroll. A castle tour of Zakarpattia can be organized for one or two days, combined with local wine tasting and traditional Zakarpattia cuisine.
