What to see in Shayan and the surroundings: itineraries for 1, 3 and 7 days
Three ready-made plans from the guesthouse: drive times, seasonal tips and links to guides
For one day, the pump room, the Velyatyno thermal springs and the lake are enough. For three days, add Khust with its castle, a farm and Mukachevo, and for a week, wine, a gastronomic tour and the mountains. All plans are self-guided: the guesthouse offers accommodation only. For a first visit to Shayan we recommend 5-7 days.
Checked: October 2026
The plans include only places that have their own guides on the site, so you will find a link next to every stop. Drive times are for a car from the guesthouse without traffic or stops, based on OpenStreetMap data. In season, at weekends and in bad weather the drive will take longer. All distances are collected in the distances from Shayan table.
The pump room and the lake are close to the guesthouse, within walking distance. You will need a car or taxi for the other places. Check opening hours, prices and whether you need to book ahead directly with each venue: they are separate places, not guesthouse services. You can stay in the guesthouse apartments; the minimum stay is from 3 nights in May–September and from 2 nights in other months.
1-day itinerary: closest to the guesthouse
If you are in Shayan for just a day, do not chase distances. The pump room, the thermal pools and the lake make a relaxed day without a long drive.
One day
- Morning
Start with the pump room: it is a 5-minute walk from the guesthouse. Try the Shayan water and stroll around the village. The guide to Shayan mineral water tells you more about the water.
- Daytime
Head to the thermal springs in Velyatyno: 12 km, about 15 minutes by car. The basic ticket covers 3 hours. For current prices and opening hours, see the guide to thermal springs.
- Evening
Return to Shayan and finish the day by Shayan Lake, about 1 km from the guesthouse. You can have dinner at one of the village's venues; a selection is on the where to eat in Shayan page.
3-day itinerary: Shayan, Khust and Mukachevo
Three days let you see the village, the nearest town and one longer trip. Spend one day in Shayan, the second around Khust, and the third in Mukachevo.
Day 1. Shayan and Velyatyno
- Morning
The pump room (5 minutes on foot) and a stroll around the village. Read more about the water and how to drink it in the mineral water guide.
- Daytime
Velyatyno thermal springs: 12 km, about 15 minutes by car. Check prices and opening hours before you go.
- Evening
Spend the evening by Shayan Lake or by the guesthouse pool. The heated outdoor pool is open from April to October. The guesthouse pool page tells you more about the pool.
Day 2. Khust and a farm
- Morning
Khust: 18 km, about 25 minutes by car. The climb up the castle hill takes about 20 minutes on foot, and from the top you get a view of the Tisza valley. Read about the castle on the castles of Zakarpattia page.
- Daytime
The “Paradise Corner” buffalo farm in Horinchovo: 35 km, about 40 minutes by car. For details on the farm, the restaurant and tasting dairy products, see the guide to the buffalo farm. With children, you can choose the “Rancho Highland” petting zoo in Lypcha: 31 km, 38 minutes.
- Evening
You can try trout in Khust or Kolochava; a roundup of venues is in the guide to trout near Shayan. These venues do not belong to the guesthouse.
Day 3. Mukachevo and castles
- Morning
Set off in the morning: it is 86 km to Palanok Castle in Mukachevo, about 105 minutes by car. Then stroll around the old town.
- Daytime
Near Mukachevo there are two more places: St. Miklos Castle in Chynadiyovo (88 km from the guesthouse, about 110 minutes) and the Schönborn Palace in the village of Karpaty (97 km). The palace houses a sanatorium, so check the visiting conditions in advance. Details are on the castles of Zakarpattia page.
- Evening
Return to Shayan and rest. Do not plan more than two castles for this day: the drive one way takes about 105 minutes.
Week-long itinerary: from the pump room to the mountains
A week lets you take it slowly: alternate longer trips with easy days near the guesthouse. 5-7 days is what we recommend for a first visit to Shayan and the surroundings.
Day 1. Arrival and Shayan
- Daytime
Check-in from 15:00. After the journey, stroll to the pump room (5 minutes on foot) and to Shayan Lake (1 km).
- Evening
A quiet dinner in the village; a selection of venues is on the where to eat in Shayan page. Do not plan any long trips for the first day.
Day 2. Thermal springs
- Morning
Velyatyno: 12 km, about 15 minutes by car. Want more pools? Head to Kosyno: 99 km, about 125 minutes. You will find a comparison in the guide to thermal springs.
- Evening
A horse ride with a local private provider: see the horse riding page for details. The guesthouse does not organise horse riding.
Day 3. Khust and the Valley of Narcissi
- Morning
Khust Castle: 18 km, about 25 minutes by car, and the climb up the hill takes about 20 minutes. Read about the castles of Zakarpattia.
- Daytime
In late April and May, head to the Valley of Narcissi: 23 km, 30 minutes by car, and allow 2-3 hours for the visit. In other months, replace it with the ostrich farm in Khust (21 km, 29 minutes), described in the roundup of zoos and farms.
Day 4. Farms and trout
- Morning
Buffalo farm in Horinchovo: 35 km, about 40 minutes by car.
- Daytime
“Rancho Highland” petting zoo in Lypcha: 31 km, about 38 minutes by car. This is a day for children and animal lovers.
- Evening
Trout dinner: a roundup of venues is in the guide to trout near Shayan.
Day 5. Mukachevo and castles
- Daytime
Palanok Castle in Mukachevo: 86 km, about 105 minutes by car. Add Chynadiyovo Castle (88 km) or the Schönborn Palace (97 km); more on the castles of Zakarpattia page. In spring, you can choose Uzhhorod and its cherry blossoms instead of the castle: 125 km, about 150 minutes by car.
Day 6. Wine and a gastronomic tour
- Daytime
The wine cellars of Berehove: 79 km, about 100 minutes by car. The guide to Zakarpattia wine covers tastings, and the gastronomic tour of Zakarpattia covers dishes and the mushroom season. If you plan a tasting, arrange a driver or taxi.
Day 7. Mountains of your choice
- Daytime
Choose one place. Lumshory with its soaking vats: 145 km, about 175 minutes one way, or about 6 hours including the return trip (about Lumshory). Lake Synevyr: 89 km, about 140 minutes one way (ideas for trips around Zakarpattia). Check the weather and road conditions before you set off.
- Easier option
Don't want a long drive? Set off into the mountains on foot straight from the guesthouse; the routes are described in the guide to hiking in the Carpathians. Check-out is by 12:00.
How to adapt the plan to the season
- Spring: narcissi bloom in late April and May, and the sakura in Uzhhorod in April. See the Valley of Narcissi and sakura in Uzhhorod.
- Summer: it is warm enough for the lake, the farms and the pool, and longer trips are best started in the morning. You will find ideas for families on the summer holidays page.
- Autumn: a time for tastings, castles and the mushroom season, which runs from July to October. Read about autumn holidays.
- Winter: the thermal pools are open all year, but head into the mountains only after checking road conditions. Details are on the winter holidays page.
You will find temperature, rain and snow by month in the guide when to go to Shayan.
